US Weighs Moving Military Bases Away from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia: Report

The United States is actively considering shifting some of its key military installations out of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The move aims to reduce exposure to Iranian missile and drone strikes should fresh hostilities erupt in the Middle East. Israel is emerging as one possible alternative location, according to American officials familiar with the internal discussions.

US Military Eyes Strategic Repositioning Across the Middle East

Washington is weighing a major shake-up of its military presence across the Middle East. American defense officials are reviewing plans to pull back forces from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia two longstanding pillars of US military positioning in the region. The goal is to cut down vulnerability to potential Iranian attacks.

The Wall Street Journal broke the story, citing American officials aware of the ongoing internal discussions. The Pentagon has not made any public announcements on the matter.

Bahrain Base Takes Center Stage in Restructuring Plans

Military leadership is currently examining options to upgrade the US naval base in Bahrain. Simultaneously, planners are considering reducing troop numbers in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The broader proposal involves shifting certain bases or their key functions westward, moving them farther beyond the reach of Iranian rockets and drones.

The Bahrain naval installation reportedly suffered multiple strikes since the start of military operations against Iran. The Journal claims those attacks caused serious structural damage damage that the Pentagon never officially acknowledged.

Pentagon May Abandon Rebuilding Damaged Facilities

One source familiar with the deliberations suggested that the US might simply walk away from rebuilding some of the damaged structures. Instead, military planners are reportedly looking at moving certain command centers underground. There are also proposals to spread military infrastructure more evenly across the wider region rather than concentrating it in a few vulnerable spots. Critically, no final decisions have been locked in yet.

Israel Emerging as a Possible Alternative Base Location

Israel is now being floated as one potential site for repositioned American forces. During the recent military operation against Iran, dozens of US aircraft including fighter jets and aerial refueling tankers were already operating from Israeli territory. That existing footprint makes Israel a practical candidate for a more permanent or expanded role.
