Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday announced that India has signaled its readiness to press Russia towards accepting a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Ukraine.
The statement followed his phone discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin. Taking to X, Zelenskyy wrote, “India is ready to make the necessary efforts and convey the right signal to Russia and other leaders during the meetings at the summit. Thank you.”

Calling the exchange with Modi “productive and important,” Zelenskyy said the two shared a vision for achieving genuine peace. He also conveyed to the Indian leader his openness to meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin directly for peace talks.
“Nearly two weeks have gone by, and instead of showing readiness for diplomacy, Russia has continued launching brutal strikes on civilian areas, killing dozens of innocent people,” he said in his post. Zelenskyy added that he appreciated Modi’s condolences to the families of the victims.
The Ukrainian president reiterated that a ceasefire was the essential first step to ending the war. “Peace must start with silence – an immediate ceasefire. This is a principle understood and backed by everyone. There can be no meaningful peace dialogue while our towns and communities remain under constant attack,” he stressed.
The leaders also spoke about strengthening India–Ukraine relations. Zelenskyy said they discussed exchange of visits and preparations for a meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission, noting that he looked forward to meeting Modi in person soon.
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent position that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way forward, underlining New Delhi’s commitment to de-escalation and humanitarian concerns. “India extends full support to all efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability,” he wrote on X.
Thank President Zelenskyy for his phone call today. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspect, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction. @ZelenskyyUa
