Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani’s victory crushed President Donald Trump’s hopes. Mamdani secured a powerful and decisive win in the New York mayoral race.

New York is one of America’s largest cities. Something remarkable has happened there. Indian-origin Democrat Zohran Mamdani is now the new Mayor. He achieved a spectacular win in the mayoral election. Mamdani is the youngest mayor in a century. He is also the first Indian-origin Muslim mayor in New York history. Significantly, President Donald Trump opposed Mamdani’s victory. This win has thus been a setback for Trump as well.
Mamdani is just 34 years old as he takes up the mayoral post. He emerged as the most popular candidate in pre-election surveys. Mamdani is the son of famous filmmaker Mira Nair. He has also worked as a rapper (musical artist). He was born in Kampala, Uganda. However, he moved to New York at age seven. He later became a citizen there.
Who Did Mamdani Compete Against in the Mayoral Race?
Mamdani faced two other candidates in the New York mayoral election. Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ran as an independent. He was previously a member of the Democratic Party. The Republican Party nominated Curtis Sliwa for the election. However, both Cuomo and Curtis faced disappointment. Both these candidates were also lagging in pre-election polls.
Obama Congratulates Mamdani on His Win
Former US President Barack Obama congratulated Mamdani on his victory. He posted a message on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win. We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter.”
It is important to mention that Zohran Mamdani has been controversial. He often makes polarizing public statements. He had also made objectionable comments about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
