Bolsonaro Hints at Constitutional Changes
Flavio Bolsonaro, Brazil’s presidential candidate, says he could amend Brazil’s constitution if he wins the election. Brazilian portal G1 reported his comments this week.
First Round Ends Without a Clear Winner
Brazil held the first round of its presidential election on October 4. No candidate crossed the 50 percent threshold, the Superior Electoral Court confirmed. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, won 47.03 percent of the vote. Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took 45.16 percent. Turnout reached 78.92 percent, while more than 33 million registered voters stayed home. Since neither candidate secured a majority, a runoff has been set for October 25, 2026.
Bolsonaro Vows to Use His Majority in Congress
Speaking at a campaign event in Goiânia, Bolsonaro outlined his plans for Congress. He said:
“With a majority in the senate and a majority in the chamber of deputies to elect a speaker, we will be able to amend the constitution and restore democracy in this country.”
Bolsonaro suggested he could use that same congressional majority to amend Brazil’s constitution quickly, once in office.
No Word Yet on Which Changes He Wants
G1 noted that Bolsonaro did not specify which parts of the constitution he wants to change. Observers are closely watching how he might amend Brazil’s constitution if he wins the runoff.
