Major Defence Deal Signed

Big news has arrived in the defense sector just before Russian President Vladimir Putin’s India visit. A significant agreement has been signed between India and Russia concerning a nuclear submarine. Russia will lease an SSN (Chakra Class) submarine, which is powered by a nuclear plant, to India. Russia has assured that the refitting of this nuclear submarine will be completed by 2028. The Navy Chief stated that India desires to receive this powerful nuclear submarine by 2027.

Second Nuclear Submarine on Lease

This marks the second nuclear-powered submarine India will receive from Russia on lease. Previously, the INS Chakra submarine was leased from Russia for a decade in 2012. It was returned to Russia in 2022 after the lease period expired. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned on Tuesday (December 2, 2025) that the S-400 Defense System delivery to India might be included on the agenda during President Putin’s upcoming visit.

Putin’s State Visit to Strengthen Ties

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to arrive in India for a state visit on December 4-5. During this time, he will participate in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. President Putin will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India and Russia are now moving to expand their friendship into a significant commercial partnership as well. Consequently, discussions are actively taking place between the two nations regarding trade and commerce.

Strategic Partnership Vision

Vladimir Putin’s state visit is considered important in many respects. This trip will review the development of bilateral relations between the two countries. It will also establish a clear vision for strengthening the ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership’.
