Police Take Bolsonaro Into Custody

Police took Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro arrest into custody on Saturday. Officers moved him to police headquarters in Brasília. This comes two months after the Supreme Court convicted him. The court found him guilty of attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election.

Sentence and Spokesman’s Statement

The court sentenced Bolsonaro in September to over 27 years in prison. This was for the failed coup attempt. His spokesman, Fabio Wajngarten, clarified the situation on Saturday. He said this detention is a precautionary measure. It is not about enforcing the September sentence.

Lawyer Confirms Transfer

Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August. His lawyer confirmed authorities transferred him to detention over the weekend. His lawyer Celso Vilardi spoke to AFP about the incident.

“He has been imprisoned, but I don’t know why,” Vilardi stated.

The 70-year-old’s legal team wants him to serve time at home. They claim a regular prison poses risks to his health.

Preventive Arrest Warrant Executed

Federal police released a brief statement. They confirmed officers executed a preventive custody warrant from the Supreme Court. Brazilian media reported on Bolsonaro’s location. Police took him to a base seven miles from the presidential palace. He lived there from 2019 to 2022.

Reasons Remain Unclear

Authorities have not fully explained the court order yet. Local reports suggest the move aims to “maintain public order”.

Vilardi repeated his concern to AFP. “He has been imprisoned, but I don’t know why,” he said again.

Bolsonaro plotted to stop Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office. Despite his sentence, he has not started his term yet. Legal appeals are still in progress. Saturday’s Jair Bolsonaro arrest is reportedly separate from that conviction.

Supporters Mobilize as Tensions Rise

Supporters planned a night vigil outside his luxury condo. He had been under house arrest there since August. His senator son, Flávio Bolsonaro, called for the protest.

He urged followers in a video. “Are you going to fight for your country or are you going to watch everything on your mobile phone while sitting at home on your sofa? Come and fight with us.”

Speculation on Prison Transfer

Rumors about the arrest grew recently. Allies expressed anger about a potential transfer to Papuda. That is a maximum-security prison in Brasília.

Lula Allies Hail the Move

Supporters of President Lula welcomed the detention news. Workers’ Party MP Reimont Otoni commented on the situation.

“The message to Brazil, and to the world, is that crime doesn’t pay,” Otoni said. He noted the plot allegedly included a plan to assassinate Lula.
