Moscow and New Delhi have reaffirmed their shared commitment to expanding military-naval ties and the two nations are now looking well beyond warships.

Russia and India Agree to Deepen Naval Ties, Shipbuilding Ventures, and Trade Routes
Senior officials from Russia and India held high-level maritime consultations in Moscow and the outcome signals a significant push to strengthen bilateral cooperation across shipbuilding, naval security, and international trade corridors.
High-Level Talks Kick Off in Moscow
Russia’s Presidential Aide and Maritime Board Chairman Nikolai Patrushev sat down with Indian Prime Minister’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Moscow for wide-ranging discussions on maritime cooperation. The talks covered a broad spectrum of shared interests from joint industrial projects to the safety of global sea lanes.
Shipbuilding, Ship Repair, and Research on the Table
Both sides examined Russian and Indian proposals for launching joint projects in shipbuilding and ship repair. Participants also explored the prospects of establishing closer ties between scientific and research institutions of the two countries. These discussions signal a long-term industrial vision not just diplomatic pleasantries.
Training Indian Specialists at Russian Universities
One of the key agenda items was education. The two sides discussed setting up training programs at Russian technical universities aimed at preparing engineering and technical personnel for India’s shipbuilding sector, as well as specialists for India’s merchant navy fleet.
Expanding International Trade and Transport Routes
The talks also touched on developing international transport corridors with a clear focus on boosting cargo volumes between Russia and India. Expanding these routes is seen as a practical step toward deeper economic integration between the two major powers.
Naval Security Commitment Confirmed
“Additionally, the commitment of Moscow and New Delhi to strengthening naval cooperation has been confirmed. An exchange of views also took place on matters of ensuring security in the World Ocean,” the Russian Maritime Board stated in an official release.
The discussions reflected a mutual recognition that maritime security from the Indian Ocean to international shipping lanes is a growing strategic priority for both nations.
