The Night Ukraine’s Sky Was Set Ablaze

Russia launched a large-scale retaliatory strike on Ukrainian military targets over the weekend and the sheer power of the assault left Western observers visibly shaken. Britain’s Daily Express described the deployment of the Oreshnik missile as nothing short of terrifying calling it part of a “horrifying wave of attacks” that swept across Ukraine in a single night.

The Oreshnik a ballistic missile capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads was fired alongside the Kinzhal, Iskander, and Zircon missiles. Russia’s Defence Ministry stated all targets were hit with precision and it was made explicitly clear that no civilian infrastructure was involved or targeted.

A Dormitory Attack That Sparked the Retaliation

The retaliatory strikes came directly in response to a Ukrainian drone attack that struck a dormitory at the Starobelsk Pedagogical College part of the Luhansk State Pedagogical University in the LPR late Friday night. The building collapsed. Eighty-six students were inside at the time. There were no military facilities anywhere near the site.

Twenty-one teenagers lost their lives another 42 sustained injuries. The attack drew immediate and widespread condemnation and Moscow wasted no time in making its response known.

Russia’s Calculated Military Response

Between Saturday and Sunday night, Russian armed forces launched coordinated strikes against Ukrainian military infrastructure. The operation combined Oreshnik, Kinzhal, Iskander, and Zircon missiles all of which reached their designated targets. The Ministry of Defence framed the operation as a direct response to what it called terrorist acts carried out by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Officials were firm on one point civilian infrastructure was never on the list.
