Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the new Poseidon torpedo is unmatched globally. This nuclear-powered weapon can strike enemies over 14,000 kilometers away.

Russia recently conducted a successful test of the world’s most powerful nuclear-powered underwater torpedo, the Poseidon. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the test of the ‘Poseidon’ underwater drone. The test took place in the Arctic Ocean on October 28, 2025. Putin called this a major achievement. He stated that this weapon comes equipped with a nuclear unit.
Vladimir Putin mentioned that no other weapon of this kind exists worldwide. Its power far exceeds even Russia’s largest ICBM, the Sarmat. Therefore, a major question arises. How different is this Russian weapon from the nuclear arsenals of India and America?
How Powerful is Russia’s Poseidon?
The Poseidon is a state-of-the-art, nuclear-powered weapon. It can be launched underwater from a submarine. Its biggest feature is its self-sufficiency. It never needs refueling because a nuclear fuel unit is installed inside. The Russian state news agency TASS reported its operational depth. It can travel in water deeper than 1 kilometer.
Poseidon’s Speed, Range, and Strength
The Poseidon weighs 100 tonnes and measures 20 meters long. It boasts a speed of 100 knots. This velocity makes it too fast for any conventional navy to intercept. It also has the ability to become invisible underwater instantly. It can be fitted with a nuclear warhead of up to two megatons. The Russian military claims Poseidon can wipe out six large cities, like London, within minutes. Regarding its range, it can destroy targets over 14,000 kilometers away.
It carries a 2-megaton warhead, 100 times more potent than the Hiroshima bomb. It can be launched from the Arctic Sea and reach the Pacific Ocean. About 80% of the world’s coastal cities fall within its strike range. Its explosion would generate massive radioactive ocean waves. These waves would cause a tsunami, flooding the coastal cities.
How Dangerous is it Compared to America’s Weapons?
India currently possesses the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-5. Its range extends up to approximately 6,000 kilometers. America, on the other hand, has missiles with a maximum range of 13,000 kilometers. The missiles of both these nations are capable of striking targets on any other continent.
