India has surpassed the United States to claim the position of the world’s second-largest annual solar capacity addition market by 2025 crossing a remarkable 155 GW of installed solar power capacity and setting new global benchmarks in clean energy growth.

India’s Solar Rise A New Chapter in Clean Energy
India has overtaken the United States to emerge as the world’s second-largest solar energy growth market in terms of annual capacity additions by 2025. The country has crossed an impressive 155 gigawatts of installed solar power capacity a milestone that few nations have achieved so rapidly. This leap forward has brought India closer to its target of achieving 50 percent non-fossil fuel capacity. The country has also managed to fulfil its Nationally Determined Contribution goals well ahead of schedule.
PM Surya Ghar Scheme Powers Millions of Homes
Key government initiatives are making a real difference on the ground. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana a flagship rooftop solar scheme has been transforming households across the country. Rooftop solar panels now power over 40 lakh families, giving them access to clean and affordable electricity. This scheme alone stands as a testimony to India’s ground-level solar push reaching citizens directly, not just through large utility projects.
Minister Highlights Record-Breaking Momentum
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Prahlad Joshi, spoke with visible pride about the achievement. He said India’s solar growth story is setting global standards. Strong policy support, innovation, and world-class infrastructure are together pushing capacity additions at a record pace. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s clean energy transition is accelerating rapidly, strengthening energy security, promoting sustainable development, and cementing the country’s position as a global leader in renewable energy,” Joshi said.
