Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, during their meeting on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin, reaffirmed that India and China are “development partners, not rivals.” The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said both leaders emphasised that differences should not escalate into disputes, noting that stability in their relationship is vital not just for the growth of the two nations but also for a multipolar Asia and world.

Strengthening bilateral ties
The MEA highlighted that Modi and Xi welcomed the “positive momentum and steady progress” since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024. Both sides acknowledged the importance of peace and stability along the border, commending the successful disengagement achieved last year. They reiterated commitment to a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” resolution of boundary issues, guided by long-term national interests.
Focus on trade and global role
With global instability stemming from trade tensions triggered by US tariffs, Modi and Xi underlined the role of India and China in stabilising world trade. Discussions also covered reducing the trade deficit, expanding investment, and charting a strategic roadmap for bilateral economic cooperation.
People-to-people connections
Both leaders agreed on boosting cultural and social exchanges through measures like increasing direct flights, easing visas, and continuing initiatives such as the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. These steps, they said, would strengthen ties between the people of both nations.
Strategic autonomy and global cooperation
Modi stressed that India and China should pursue “strategic autonomy” and that their relationship should not be influenced by third-party perspectives. The leaders also found common ground on wider global challenges, including terrorism and fair trade practices, pledging cooperation on multilateral platforms.
SCO and BRICS collaboration
Modi congratulated Xi on China’s presidency of the SCO and extended India’s support for the Summit in Tianjin. He also invited Xi to attend the BRICS Summit in India in 2026, an invitation the Chinese leader accepted, assuring support for India’s presidency.
Additionally, Modi met senior Chinese leader Cai Qi, where both sides reiterated their intent to expand exchanges and implement the vision set forth by Modi and Xi.
