Stampede Claims 36 Lives in Karur Rally
At least 36 people, including children, lost their lives after a stampede-like situation occurred during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. More than 50 people were injured in the incident. According to the state health minister, 29 victims were brought dead to hospitals. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as several people collapsed after being injured in the stampede during the TVK chief’s rally. Following the tragedy, state ministers, senior administrative officers, and police officials rushed to Karur.
CM Stalin Appeals for Cooperation
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin urged the public to cooperate with doctors and police after the tragic incident in Karur. He instructed senior police officials to take necessary steps to restore normalcy in the district. Stalin is expected to visit Karur on Sunday to review the situation personally.
Crowd Turns Uncontrollable During Vijay’s Address
The rally, organized by Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) under Vijay’s leadership, witnessed an uncontrollable crowd on Saturday. While Vijay addressed supporters, the swelling crowd became unmanageable. Many party workers and children fainted due to the rush, leading to panic and chaos in the gathering.

As people fainted, party workers started raising alarm. Vijay noticed the commotion and immediately stopped his speech. He threw water bottles from the specially arranged campaign bus to help the fainted individuals.
Ambulance Struggles to Reach the Spot
Due to the massive crowd, ambulances faced difficulties reaching the venue. Unconscious people were rushed to nearby hospitals with great effort. Several victims are reported to be battling for their lives. Realizing the worsening situation, Vijay cut short his address and ended the event early.

CM Stalin Directs Immediate Medical Aid
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin posted on X:
“News from Karur is worrying. I have directed former minister V. Senthilbalaji, Minister Subramaniam, and the District Collector to ensure immediate medical treatment for those who collapsed in the crowd and were admitted to hospitals.”
He added, “I have instructed Anbil Mahesh, Minister of Tiruchirappalli district, to provide all necessary support on an urgent basis. I also spoke to the ADGP for swift action to control the situation. I appeal to the public to extend cooperation with doctors and police.”
