Actor Vijay founded the ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) party this year. With 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections ahead, his rallies are drawing massive crowds. A tragic stampede broke out during one such gathering in Karur.

Vijay Enters Politics with TVK
Popular Tamil actor Vijay officially stepped into politics on 2 February 2024 by forming his own party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). He took charge as party president, while the headquarters were set up in Chennai. Vijay positioned TVK as a strong opposition front against Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK led by Chief Minister Stalin and also against the BJP. He made it clear that his party will contest in the 2026 state elections.
On 2 February 2024, the Election Commission granted official recognition to TVK, making it eligible to participate in electoral politics.
Rallies Ahead of 2026 Elections
Tamil Nadu will witness its next Assembly elections in 2026, and Vijay has already started campaigning aggressively. He has been addressing huge rallies, with thousands gathering each week. Since 13 September 2025, he began his outreach tours, starting with Trichy and Ariyalur districts, followed by Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur on 20 September.
On 27 September 2025, marking the third consecutive Saturday of campaigning, he held rallies in Namakkal during the day and later in Karur. His presence attracted enormous crowds, signaling his growing popularity across Tamil Nadu.
Chaos at Karur Rally
A major incident unfolded on Saturday evening in Karur’s Veluchamipuram when a massive crowd gathered to see Vijay. Supporters and workers assembled in large numbers, causing intense pressure at the venue. The police, trying to control the surge, resorted to baton charge at certain spots. Panic followed, leading to a stampede that turned the event into a tragic accident.
Vijay Criticizes Rivals
During his speeches, Vijay sharply criticized DMK, AIADMK, and BJP governments. He declared, “There will surely be a change in 2026 elections. Keep your confidence alive.”
While addressing the Karur rally, Vijay said, “Karur, located along the Amaravati river, has many reasons to be proud. But in recent times, the name ‘Karur’ alone has become widely recognized across India. No need to explain who is responsible for this.”
He further alleged, “There will never be a Tamil Nadu Victory Party like DMK, AIADMK, or BJP. Everyone knows AIADMK and BJP are directly connected, but BJP also maintains indirect links with DMK. Voting for DMK in 2026 elections will indirectly mean voting for BJP.”
Growing Political Wave
Vijay’s campaign momentum is drawing attention every weekend, as rallies across districts witness overwhelming participation. His strong statements against established parties and his assurance of change in 2026 are energizing his supporters. However, the Karur incident has also raised questions about security management at such massive gatherings.
