Deadly Stampede at Vijay’s Rally
A massive stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, killed 36 people on Saturday. Over 50 people sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. The devastating tragedy triggered grief across the nation, with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and several senior leaders offering condolences. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is monitoring the situation closely and will reach Karur on Sunday to meet victims and their families.

PM Modi and Leaders Express Shock
Expressing sorrow, Prime Minister Modi posted on social media platform X, “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also conveyed grief. He said, “Deeply saddened by the tragic incident at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, that has taken so many precious lives. My heart goes out to their loved ones, and I wish a swift recovery to all those injured.” He urged Congress workers and leaders to provide every possible assistance to the victims and work with authorities in rescue and relief operations.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed pain over the incident. She wrote, “Anguished to know about the tragic loss of lives in a stampede-like unfortunate incident in Karur district of Tamil Nadu. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and pray for early recovery of those injured.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also mourned the deaths. He stated, “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the Karur stampede. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I pray to God to give them strength to bear this grief and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said her heart was pained by the tragedy. “Heartbroken by the tragic stampede in Karur, TN. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones in this unimaginable tragedy. May they find strength in this difficult time, and may the injured recover soon.” She urged Congress workers to assist victims and support officials in relief measures.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed sorrow, saying, “Deeply distressed by the unfortunate and tragic stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, which claimed the lives of several innocent people. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We pray for the swift recovery of the injured. I urge Congress workers to provide all possible assistance to victims and coordinate with officials in providing urgent medical and relief support.”
Chief Minister Stalin to Visit Karur
Former minister and DMK leader V. Senthil Balaji visited the Government Medical College and Hospital in Karur to check on the injured. He revealed, “So far, 31 people have lost their lives in the stampede and 58 have been admitted to hospitals. After the tragedy, Chief Minister Stalin immediately reviewed the situation and directed the district collector, SP, and me to reach the hospital. He also advised calling in additional doctors and ensuring proper treatment.” He confirmed that Stalin will personally visit Karur on Sunday. Currently, 46 people are being treated at private hospitals and 12 at the government hospital.
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi also expressed grief, saying, “Deeply saddened and pained by the tragic death of innocent people, including children, during a political rally in Karur. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
CM Stalin Calls Situation Disturbing
Vijay was addressing a huge crowd from his campaign vehicle in Karur when people began collapsing due to suffocation. Witnesses shouted for help as several attendees, including children, fainted after waiting for hours to see the actor. Vijay immediately paused his speech when he noticed chaos and personally requested an ambulance path. He even threw water bottles from his vehicle to assist the distressed crowd. Reports confirmed that one child went missing, and Vijay asked police for urgent help.
Early official updates stated at least 30 people had fainted and were rushed to hospitals. After receiving alarming reports, CM Stalin said, “The news from Karur is disturbing.” He directed Ministers M. Subramanian and Anbil Mahesh, along with the district collector, to provide immediate support to affected people.
Vijay later resumed his speech but kept it short after the injured were taken to hospitals. The tragic incident has left the state in shock, with political leaders across India uniting in grief and urging swift relief measures.
