Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis showed his anger. He spoke regarding the sudden postponement of elections for 22 Municipal Councils. The CM expressed his deep disappointment. He said, “Voting is tomorrow. The elections were cancelled just one day before. This disappointed all our workers.” He strongly believes the Election Commission misinterpreted the law. “Elections were never postponed like this before. This happened simply because someone approached the court,” the CM noted.
Commission’s Legal Interpretation Questioned
The CM questioned the Election Commission’s legal basis. He said, “I do not know which law the Election Commission is citing. I don’t know who they are consulting either.” He consulted many lawyers about the issue. Fadnavis confirmed that elections cannot be postponed. This is true just because one individual approaches the court.
CM Cites Nilanga Example
Fadnavis then gave the example of Nilanga. He stated, “Take the Nilanga example. I spoke with Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar.” All the necessary procedures were complete there. One person’s form was cancelled. He went to court. The court upheld the form cancellation. The other candidates got time to campaign fully. “It is wrong to postpone the election just because someone went to court,” the CM stressed. He acknowledged the Commission is an autonomous body. “Holding elections is their right,” he agreed. “However, legally moving the election date forward was wrong,” he asserted. “This is injustice to those who prepared honestly. It is also an injustice to the hardworking party workers. We will present our formal representation to the Election Commission on this matter.”
CM: Commission’s Decision Wrong, Not Urban Development Related
He clearly stated that postponing the election was incorrect. He added, “The Urban Development Department has no connection with this. This is purely the Election Commission’s decision.” Collectors submitted their reports. The Commission made its decision based on those. “We have to accept the decision,” the CM said finally. He firmly concluded, “But that decision is wrong.”
