Oli to visit India on September 16 at PM Modi’s invitation

Nepal’s Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli on Sunday voiced support for China’s Global Security Initiative while participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin.
Oli assured Beijing of Nepal’s cooperation in its global development and security programs, emphasizing that Kathmandu expects China to play a greater role in global affairs.
During the summit, Oli briefly met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described India’s relationship with Nepal as “deep and very special.” Oli is scheduled to travel to India on September 16 at Modi’s invitation.
A day earlier, Oli raised concerns with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding Beijing’s understanding with New Delhi on building a road through Lipulekh, a region Oli claims belongs to Nepal. Xi reportedly advised him to address the matter directly with India.
Highlighting Nepal’s longstanding ties with China, Oli expressed commitment to expanding cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture, technology, tourism, and climate change.
China’s Foreign Ministry noted that Oli reaffirmed Nepal’s support for the “One China Principle,” opposing Taiwanese independence and vowing not to let Nepalese territory be used against China’s interests.
Oli also praised the significance of the SCO and endorsed the “Shanghai Spirit.” Nepal, currently a dialogue partner in the SCO, is seeking to upgrade its status to that of an Observer.
