The discussions come as Myanmar’s military-led government recently confirmed that long-delayed elections will be held on December 28.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Myanmar’s acting President and military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China.
This was the second interaction between the two leaders in recent months, following their April meeting during the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.
The talks took place against the backdrop of Myanmar’s announcement that its long-awaited national elections will be held on December 28—marking the country’s first polls in nearly five years. The vote comes after the 2021 military coup that ousted the elected civilian administration of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
PM Modi meets Xi Jinping
Earlier in the day, PM Modi also met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. During the discussion, the Indian Prime Minister emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in border regions is crucial for advancing bilateral ties.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, both leaders expressed satisfaction over the disengagement achieved last year and the preservation of calm along the frontier since then.
SCO Summit begins today
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit is set to begin this evening at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Centre in Tianjin. Following the opening ceremony and group photograph, participating leaders will attend a reception and concert.
The SCO currently has 10 member states: India, Belarus, China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It also includes several observers and dialogue partners.
India joined the SCO as a full member in 2017, after serving as an observer since 2005. During the summit, PM Modi is also expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
