PM Modi Begins Historic Journey to Africa
Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for Johannesburg, South Africa, today (Friday, November 21). He will participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled from November 21 to 23, 2025. South Africa is hosting this prestigious gathering. This event marks a special milestone. It is the first time the G20 Summit is happening on the African continent. This is also the fourth consecutive time the Global South is hosting this summit.
Significance of the Summit
PM Modi departed following an invitation from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of this trip before leaving. He recalled India’s G20 presidency in 2023. The African Union received permanent G20 membership during that time. Holding this summit in Africa now strengthens that historic decision.
Theme and India’s Vision
Focus on Solidarity and Sustainability
The theme for this year’s G20 gathering is ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’. This theme continues the work started during the summits in India and Brazil. PM Modi stated he will share India’s unique perspective. He will focus on the vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’—One Earth, One Family, One Future.
Engaging with IBSA and Diaspora
Strengthening Ties with Global Partners
Prime Minister Modi will also attend the 6th IBSA (India-Brazil-South Africa) Summit during his visit. The leaders will discuss strategic cooperation and global challenges. They will also talk about economic partnerships and development agendas. South Africa is home to a large number of people of Indian origin. PM Modi expressed his eagerness to meet the Indian community there. This diaspora is one of the largest Indian groups in the world.
