Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s ambassador to the US, said Sergio Gor’s nomination would be “viewed as a sign of importance and priority of India-US ties”.

India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, on Wednesday expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s decision to nominate Sergio Gor as the next American ambassador to New Delhi. His backing comes just weeks after Gor was officially named for the high-profile role, putting an end to months of speculation over who would take the crucial position.
Kwatra noted that Gor, who is among Trump’s most trusted associates, being selected for the role would be “viewed as a sign of importance and priority of India-US ties.”
“I welcome that President Trump is sending one of his most trusted aides, @SergioGor, to serve as the next US Ambassador to India,” Kwatra shared in a post on X.
The envoy further remarked that Gor’s nomination reflects “a commitment to strengthen the bridges and deepen the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”
India and US move closer on trade ties
Kwatra’s comments come at a time when India and the US appear to be warming up after months of trade disagreements. Recent statements by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump suggest that both nations may soon find common ground in their trade dispute.
The United States’ steep tariffs of 50% on Indian imports took effect on August 27, sparking initial tensions. However, Trump recently struck a more positive tone, announcing that trade talks between Washington and New Delhi have resumed. On Wednesday, he said he was eager to engage in discussions with his “very good friend” PM Modi. Responding to that, Modi said the fresh talks had the potential to unlock the “limitless potential” of trade relations between the two nations.
Sergio Gor chosen as next envoy to India
Sergio Gor, 38, a businessman and political strategist, is currently the head of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. Last month, Trump nominated him as the next US Ambassador to India. “I am pleased to announce that I am promoting Sergio Gor to be our next United States Ambassador to the Republic of India, and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs,” Trump had declared earlier.
According to PTI, Gor is expected to face the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in Washington DC for his confirmation hearing, where he will seek approval as the ‘Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of India.’
His nomination has already received strong backing from several senior members of Trump’s administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Under Secretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby.
