US envoy nominee Sergio Gor has called stopping Russian oil imports a top priority. He also stressed the strong friendship between Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying Trump often criticizes India but never fails to praise Modi.

Sergio Gor on Trump and Modi
Sergio Gor, nominated as the next US ambassador to India, has made a strong statement about the relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said Trump never criticized Modi even during the tariff dispute. While Trump raised objections about India, he continued praising Modi without hesitation.
Gor emphasized that President Trump shares a deep friendship with Modi. He explained, “If you have noticed, when Trump criticizes other countries, he usually targets their leaders. But when he talks about India, he highlights Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and praises him openly.”
Russian Oil Imports Priority for Trump Administration
Gor also addressed the issue of Russian oil. He said stopping India from buying Russian oil is a top priority for the Trump administration. However, he added that the gap between India and the US on tariff negotiations is not very wide. According to him, “We are not far from a promising agreement on tariffs. Discussions are already underway on the details.”
Referring to expectations from New Delhi, Gor told PTI, “We sometimes expect more from India than we do from other countries. I believe this issue will be resolved within the coming weeks.”
India as a Strategic Partner
Highlighting India’s importance, Gor called the country a “strategic partner.” He said, “Under the strong leadership of President Donald Trump, I am committed to advancing US interests in this vital partnership. India’s geographic location, economic growth, and military strength make it a cornerstone of regional stability and an essential driver of prosperity. It also plays a critical role in advancing our shared security goals.”
Despite tariff tensions, Gor underlined the personal bond between Trump and Modi. He described their connection as an “incredible relationship” that continues to strengthen ties between both nations. He explained, “Whenever Trump targets other nations, he directs his criticism at their leaders. But when he comments on India, he makes sure to praise Prime Minister Modi. Their bond is remarkable.”
Gor’s Nomination and Rubio’s Endorsement
At present, Sergio Gor serves as the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. President Trump nominated him in August to become the next US ambassador to India. However, his appointment is still awaiting confirmation from the US Senate.
Introducing Gor in the committee, US Senator Marco Rubio said he has known Gor for a long time. Rubio praised the US-India relationship, calling it “one of the best in the world.” He added, “India is a key partner, and this relationship represents one of America’s strongest global ties, shaping the future of the world.”
