Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar Steps Up as India’s 48th Vice Chief of Naval Staff

A significant leadership shift unfolded at India’s Naval Headquarters on Friday Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar officially took over as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS). He steps into the role previously held by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, marking a major transition at the top of India’s naval command structure.

A Solemn Beginning at the National War Memorial

Right after assuming charge, Vice Admiral Kochhar made his way to the National War Memorial in New Delhi. He laid a floral wreath to honour the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan the outgoing VCNS also paid his respects at the memorial. Later, Kochhar received a ceremonial guard of honour at South Block, a tradition that marks the formal handover of such a high-ranking military post.

A Decorated Career Spanning Over Three Decades

Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar brings an extraordinary career record to his new role. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988 as an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune he is a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems. Over more than 37 years of service, he has commanded warships including INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti, and INS Kirpan. He also served as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the frigate INS Trikand a career milestone few officers achieve.

From Western Fleet to Andaman and Nicobar Command

On promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, Vice Admiral Kochhar took up key roles in aircraft carrier projects and warship production and acquisition. He later commanded the Western Fleet in 2021. He then served as Commandant of the National Defence Academy where he worked to raise training standards and improve infrastructure. Most recently, he led the Andaman and Nicobar Command India’s only integrated tri-service operational command as its Commander-in-Chief.

During his tenure at ANC, he played a pivotal role in boosting jointness among the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. His leadership also steered the command through high-stakes operations including its response to conventional and non-traditional threats along India’s western seaboard during Operation Sindoor.

Honours That Reflect Exceptional Service

For his outstanding leadership, Vice Admiral Kochhar received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026 two of the highest peacetime military honours in India.

Defence observers expect his appointment as VCNS to strengthen India’s maritime preparedness. His deep experience in joint operations and strategic command makes him well-suited to guide the Indian Navy through an increasingly complex Indo-Pacific security environment.
