Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma explained why the people of the state were mourning Zubeen with such deep emotions.

The Chief Minister shared a touching video on social media and reflected on the sorrow. He wrote, “In the past few days, people outside Assam have asked me why we are so emotional for Zubeen. There is no single answer, but three things are clear. His music connected directly with our emotions and represented Assam’s diversity. His courage was remarkable. He was a born rebel and fearless in his opinions. But above all, he was one of the most helpful and compassionate human beings on this earth. Zubeen will always live in our hearts.”
Scheduled Performance and the Tragic Accident
Zubeen was set to perform at the North East Festival in Singapore on September 20. A day before the concert, on September 19, he went scuba diving when the unfortunate accident occurred. He was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved. After his passing, his mortal remains were brought from Singapore to Delhi and then transported to Guwahati. On Monday, he was cremated with full state honors.
State Declares Three Days of Mourning
His sudden death not only shocked the film and music industry but also left Assam in deep sorrow. As a mark of respect, the Assam government announced three days of state mourning from September 20 to September 22. During this period, no entertainment programs or celebrations took place anywhere in the state.
Record-Breaking Crowd at Funeral
An unprecedented crowd turned up to pay last respects to the beloved star. Among the lakhs of people present, many prominent personalities also attended the funeral. The massive turnout led to a record being registered. The Limca Book of Records listed Zubeen’s funeral among the largest public funerals in history.
