Bihar assembly elections are fast approaching. Police arrested Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] candidate Anant Singh on Saturday night. This late-night operation was related to the Jan Suraaj supporter Dularchand Yadav’s murder. Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartikeya Sharma made a statement. He confirmed two of Singh’s associates were also arrested. Their names are Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram.

Yadav was fatally shot on October 30. This occurred during an election campaign in Mokama. Firing took place between two rival groups. Anant Singh is the JD(U) candidate for the Mokama seat. Police reports say Singh was arrested from his Barh house. Barh is about 200 km from Patna. PTI reported that he and his two associates will face the magistrate.

What We Know So Far in the Dularchand Yadav Murder Case

  1. Yadav was killed during a candidate supporters’ clash in Mokama. This happened while campaigning for the Bihar assembly elections. Police confirmed stones were thrown in the fight. Several people suffered injuries due to this stone pelting.
  2. Patna Police arrested JD(U) Mokama candidate Anant Singh for the murder. Two associates, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, were also arrested. SSP Kartikeya Sharma stated, “All this happened while the candidate, Anant Singh, was present. He is also the main accused in this case. Anant Singh has been arrested now. His accomplices, Manikant Thakur and Ranjeet Ram, were also arrested along with him.”
  3. SSP Sharma guaranteed voters that elections would be peaceful. He urged them to vote without any fear. “I want to assure all Patna voters that polls will be peaceful. They can fearlessly come out and cast their vote. Patna Police and the administration stand with the voters. No one will be stopped from using their right,” he told ANI.
  4. Patna district magistrate (DM) Thiyagarajan SM said the situation is normal now. This return to calm followed Anant Singh’s arrest. He added that strict action is being taken against anti-social elements. These elements were all involved in the murder case. “The Model Code of Conduct is a strong pillar in the election process. We are committed to a fair election. This is as per the Election Commission’s instructions,” he said.
  5. The Election Commission took action on Saturday. It ordered the transfer of Patna superintendent of police (Rural) Vikram Sihag. Two station house officers (SHOs) were also suspended. They are Ghoswari SHO Madhusudan Kumar and Bhadaur SHO Ravi Ranjan. Their suspension is related to this case.
  6. Mokama is famous for being a ‘bahubali’ stronghold. These influential figures are often very controversial. This year’s election will be a contest. It is between JD(U)’s Anant Singh and RJD’s Veena Devi. Veena Devi is the wife of influential former MP Surajbhan Singh.
  7. RJD’s Veena Devi had earlier expressed concern. She blamed the local administration for not investigating the murder. “I met the deceased man’s family members. The local administration is showing no interest in the investigation,” she commented.
  8. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial candidate. He criticized the BJP-led NDA government. He blamed them for “protecting criminals.” He also questioned the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its ‘silence.’ He said, “Murders happen in broad daylight. Names are clearly in the FIRs. Yet the accused walks past the police station and campaigns. He roams around with a 40-person convoy. They all carry guns and ammunition.”
  9. Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal earlier promised strict action. “Bihar has the rule of law. The criminal will be punished under the rule of law. It does not matter who they are,” he stated.
