Nitish Kumar Unanimously Chosen as NDA Leader Before New Bihar Government Oath

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been elected as the NDA legislative leader following a massive election victory. This decision comes just one day before his swearing-in ceremony.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar became the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative leader on Wednesday. The alliance made this unanimous decision a day before the official oath ceremony. His deputies Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha attended the meeting. LJP (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan and Bihar BJP president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal were also present.

The 2025 Bihar assembly elections ended with a massive sweep for the NDA. The alliance secured 202 seats in total. Out of these, the BJP won 89 seats. The Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) secured 85 seats. Earlier, the JD(U) elected Kumar as their legislative party leader in Patna.

Kumar will submit his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan today. He is set to take the oath as Chief Minister for the 10th time. Before the government formation, the BJP elected Samrat Choudhary as their legislative leader. They also picked Vijay Sinha as the deputy leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow. Many Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states will also join the event. BJP leader Prem Kumar told ANI, “The leader of the BJP legislature party will be selected today. It will be a historic oath-taking ceremony tomorrow as PM Modi and CMs of all states will be attending it.”

The NDA won a historic 202 out of 243 seats in the 2025 polls. The Mahagathbandhan only managed to secure 35 seats. This is the second time the NDA crossed the 200-seat mark. They previously won 206 seats in 2010.

Party Wise Breakdown

The BJP won 89 seats and the JD(U) won 85 seats. The LJP (Ram Vilas) took 19 seats. HAMS won five seats, while Rashtriya Lok Morcha won four. In the opposition, the RJD won 25 seats and Congress won six. The CPI(ML)(L) won two seats. The IIP and CPI(M) won one seat each. AIMIM secured five seats and the BSP won one.

Voter Turnout Facts

Voting happened in two phases on November 6 and 11. Bihar saw a record 67.13 percent voter turnout. This is the highest since 1951. Women voters outnumbered men in this election.
