West Bengal Votes in First Phase Across 152 Seats in 16 Districts
West Bengal is all set to head to the polls on April 23 for the first phase of the state assembly elections. Voting will cover 152 out of the total 294 assembly seats spread across 16 districts. A total of 1,478 candidates are in the running for these constituencies in this crucial first round.
The Election Commission of India has completed all groundwork for a smooth, transparent, and incident-free election day. Voting will take place across 44,376 polling booths, which include nearly 3,000 auxiliary booths set up for added convenience.
Women-Managed Booths and Model Polling Stations Take Centre Stage
A standout feature of this phase is the strong emphasis on women’s participation and representation. As many as 5,444 polling booths will be entirely run by women staff. Additionally, 207 model booths have been set up across constituencies to offer voters a better experience.
Special booths managed by persons with disabilities (PwD) have been established in the Balurghat and Asansol Dakshin assembly constituencies. Women candidates are also making a significant presence, with 167 female contenders in the fray in this first phase alone.
Full Webcasting and Strong Security Measures in Place
The Election Commission has confirmed that 100% webcasting will cover all booths during polling. This move ensures complete digital surveillance and real-time monitoring throughout the day.
To maintain peace and order during voting, the Commission has deployed Quick Response Teams (QRTs), flying squads, and CCTV cameras across all constituencies. The measures reflect the administration’s commitment to free and fair elections across West Bengal.
