The political deadlock is clearly worsening before next year’s elections in Bangladesh. The fundamentalist Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, said on Tuesday (October 28, 2025) that polls are impossible under a caretaker government, even if the Supreme Court’s ruling restores the system.

SC Hearing Continues on Caretaker Government Plea

Jamaat’s lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Monir, made this comment. It followed a hearing at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. The appeal demanded the restoration of a caretaker government system during the election period. This hearing continued for the fourth day on Tuesday, local media reported.

Caretaker Government System under SC Decision

Major Bangladeshi daily Jugantor quoted Monir. He mentioned that a caretaker government is usually formed within 15 days of Parliament’s dissolution. However, Parliament does not currently exist. Parliament was dissolved over a year ago. An interim government is currently running the country. There are also other issues involved. Therefore, the system is not possible for the upcoming elections. This holds true even if the Supreme Court’s decision brings the caretaker government system back.

Last week, Jamaat’s lawyer addressed the Supreme Court. This was during the third day of hearings. The hearings concerned appeals and review petitions challenging the 2011 ruling. He told the court that the current interim government cannot effectively implement this system. This is because Parliament is currently inactive.

Call to Act as ‘Caretaker Government’

He further stated that any Appellate Division decision must align with the July Charter resolutions. This relates to the caretaker government system. Separately, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) recently appealed to the interim government. The BNP urged the Mohammad Yunus-led government to function as a ‘caretaker government.’ This is intended to ensure next year’s elections are free, acceptable, and fair.

A media briefing emphasized the current necessity. The upcoming national parliamentary election must be meaningful, fair, and acceptable to everyone. The interim government can play the role of a caretaker government to achieve this goal.

Awami League Clashes Over Reform Proposals

Uncertainty and political turmoil are increasing in Bangladesh before next year’s polls. Parties previously collaborated with Yunus to overthrow the democratically elected government. This was the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina. Now, they are reportedly clashing amongst themselves over reform proposals.
