Biden Goes to Court : Demands DOJ Keep Memoir Recordings Sealed Forever

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has filed a formal lawsuit against the Justice Department. He wants a federal court to permanently block the release of audio recordings conversations he held with his memoir co-author between 2016 and 2017.

“Plaintiff Joseph Biden requests the court to impose a permanent injunction on the Department of Justice’s disclosure of materials to the committee,” the lawsuit states.

Republican-Led Committee Wants the Recordings : Biden Says No

Biden strongly objects to the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee getting its hands on these materials. The recordings were part of his memoir writing process and they covered deeply personal ground. Biden noted that his eldest son Beau died of cancer in 2015. Many of his conversations with the ghostwriter touched directly on that loss.

DOJ Got the Files in 2023 Found No Criminal Grounds Against Biden

The Justice Department received those materials in 2023. That was during the investigation into Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified documents. The probe ultimately found no basis to bring criminal charges against him.

Trump’s DOJ Reversed Course Plans to Hand Over Files by June 15

Biden insists that releasing the recordings would violate his right to privacy something the DOJ previously seemed to agree with. But under President Donald Trump, the department changed its stance entirely. In February, officials announced plans to hand over both the audio recordings and transcripts to congressional lawmakers with a deadline of June 15.
