Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed a direct phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday covering a broad range of global concerns, from NATO commitments to the escalating situation in Iran and ongoing Middle East tensions. Senior American officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, also joined parts of the call.

Canada-U.S. Hotline: Carney and Trump Connect Over Major Global Issues
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney picked up the phone with U.S. President Donald Trump this week and the agenda was anything but light. The two leaders had what Carney described as a wide-ranging conversation covering NATO, Iran, and the broader Middle East crisis.
“We had a lengthy discussion… on a wide range of issues. Some of them related to NATO, and some were about the situation with Iran and the Middle East,” Carney told reporters on Thursday.
Trump Reached Out First And Brought Company
The call took place on Wednesday and it was Trump who dialed in first. Carney confirmed that senior members of the American administration dropped into the conversation at various points. One notable participant was U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who joined the call for portions of the discussion.
NATO, Iran, and the Middle East : All on the Table
The timing of the call carries weight. NATO defense spending debates have been intensifying across member countries. Meanwhile, Iran-linked tensions continue to shape U.S. foreign policy decisions and the Middle East remains a diplomatic flashpoint. Carney’s call with Trump signals Canada is staying closely engaged on all three fronts.
The conversation underscores the active if occasionally tense diplomatic channel between Ottawa and Washington under the current administrations.
