A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Chiba Prefecture a region sitting just beside Japan’s sprawling capital, Tokyo early Friday morning. Japan’s Meteorological Agency confirmed the seismic event and immediately ruled out any tsunami threat.
Tokyo Residents Feel Brief Tremors
Light and brief tremors from the earthquake reached central Tokyo as well. Residents in the Japanese capital reported sensing the mild shaking though it lasted only a short time before settling down. The quake’s epicentre lay deep underground, at a depth of 50 kilometres beneath Chiba Prefecture.
Seismic Intensity Recorded at Level 4
Japan uses its own seven-point seismic intensity scale to measure how strongly the ground shakes in different areas. The earthquake near Tokyo recorded a maximum intensity of 4 on that national scale considered moderate on Japan’s measuring system. At that level, objects indoors may rattle and people feel noticeable shaking.
No Deaths, No Damage Reported
There are no reports of casualties or structural damage linked to this earthquake. Authorities have not issued any evacuation orders or emergency alerts beyond standard monitoring. The situation remained stable following the tremor near Tokyo.
