Cuba firmly rejected U.S. claims of its involvement in the Ukraine war, insisting it never sent soldiers or supported any military mission.

Cuba Rejects U.S. Allegations
Cuba on Saturday strongly denied U.S. allegations linking it to the ongoing Russia Ukraine War, saying it had no participation in the conflict or deployment of soldiers.
According to its Foreign Ministry, Cuba “rejects the false accusations that the United States government is spreading about Cuba’s alleged involvement in the military conflict in Ukraine.”
Cuban Citizens Sentenced for Mercenary Acts
The ministry confirmed that 26 Cubans have been sentenced to prison terms between five and 14 years for taking part in mercenary activities since September 2023. These cases surfaced after reports claimed that some Cubans were being sent to fight in Ukraine.
U.S. Accuses Havana of Failing to Protect Its Citizens
Earlier this week, a U.S. State Department spokesperson told AFP, “We’re aware of reports that Cuban nationals are fighting alongside Russian troops in the Russia-Ukraine war.” The official added that the Cuban regime “has failed to protect its citizens from being used as pawns in the Russia-Ukraine war.”
Ukraine’s Data on Cuban Fighters
In May, Ukraine’s government-backed “I Want to Live” project said it had evidence of over 1,000 Cuban mercenaries recruited by Russia since early 2023.
“We know the names and details of 1,028 Cubans who signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces during 2023–2024,” the project revealed.
Cuba Maintains State Was Not Involved
The Cuban Foreign Ministry stressed it has no verified information about Cubans who may have joined the war independently.
“It is undeniable that none of them acted with the encouragement, commitment, or consent of the Cuban State,” the ministry stated.
Families Claim Deceptive Recruitment
Relatives of Cubans who left for Russia in 2023 told AFP that their loved ones were tricked through online job ads promising lucrative opportunities but ending up in the war zone instead.
