Charlie Kirk, a close aide of US President Donald Trump, was shot dead at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Trump expressed grief over his death. Over the past decade, Kirk rose as a rising star within the Republican Party, strengthening his online influence and building Turning Point USA into a powerful conservative organization.

Shooting at Utah Valley University
On Wednesday, a tragic shooting took place at Utah Valley University in Orem. Charlie Kirk, a close aide of Donald Trump, was shot while addressing a conservative student gathering. He could not survive the attack. The news of his death was later confirmed by Trump himself, who also offered condolences.
Charlie Kirk: Conservative Voice at 31
Charlie Kirk was the CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, a conservative youth organization. At just 31 years old, he had already built a reputation as one of the most influential conservative voices in America. He was delivering a speech at the university when the gunfire struck.
After the incident, Donald Trump shared his sorrow on X. He wrote, “No one understood the hearts of young Americans better than Charlie. Everyone, especially I, loved and respected him. Now he is no longer with us. Melania and I extend our condolences to his wife Erika and family. Charlie, we love you!”
National Mourning Declared
According to a White House post, Trump ordered all American flags across the country to fly at half-mast in Kirk’s honor. Known as a strong conservative influencer, Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of only 18. The group promotes conservative values across high school and college campuses.
In 2024, Kirk addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he focused on issues concerning the youth. His influence extended far beyond campuses, making him a central figure in Republican politics.
Plans for the “American Comeback Tour”
The shooting happened just before Kirk was about to launch a national debate tour called “The American Comeback Tour.” The tour planned stops at Colorado State University, the University of Minnesota, and several other campuses.
Kirk was also scheduled to debate progressive influencer Hasan Piker at Dartmouth College on September 25. After hearing about the attack, Piker expressed shock during his livestream, saying he feared such violence could also target him or others.
Rising Star in Republican Politics
Over the past decade, Kirk became a rising star within the Republican Party. His online presence grew rapidly, and he turned Turning Point USA into one of the party’s most influential organizations.
His breakthrough came at the 2016 Republican National Convention when his speech gained national attention. He was only 22 at that time. Since then, Turning Point USA has played a key role in swing states, organizing large political events.
During the 2024 election cycle, Kirk openly criticized then-Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel. He urged his donors to stop funding the national party. A few months later, McDaniel stepped down.
Praise from Donald Trump Jr.
In 2024, Donald Trump Jr. praised Kirk in a written statement to The Arizona Republic. He said, “Thanks to Charlie Kirk and Turning Point, the conservative movement now has courage. Turning Point has an impact because they pick the right fights, work hard, and never apologize. That inspires people.”
Early Life and Family
Kirk was born in Illinois and became politically active during high school. He even left college to pursue activism full-time. In 2021, he married former Miss Arizona, Erika Frantzve. The couple had two children, a daughter and a son.
