India and Russia sealed a major aviation agreement. HAL and PJSC-UAC signed an MoU in Moscow. This pact enables the manufacturing of the Sukhoi Superjet SJ-100 civil aircraft in India.

India and Russia have taken a big step in the aviation sector. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s Public Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Corporation (PJSC-UAC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The signing ceremony took place on Monday (October 27) in Moscow. This agreement centers on the manufacture of the Sukhoi Superjet SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft within India.
This is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft. It can accommodate approximately 100 passengers. Its operational range is about 3000 kilometers. The design focuses specifically on domestic flights. Reports confirm over 200 such aircraft have been built globally so far. More than 16 airline operators currently use this jet.
‘Make in India’ Initiative to Get Stronger
Experts suggest SJ-100 manufacturing in India could be a game-changer. It will support the nation’s regional air connectivity plan, UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). This is expected to greatly help connect smaller cities and towns to the air network. HAL gains exclusive rights for SJ-100 aircraft production in India through this deal. This project elevates India’s Civil Aviation sector. It will also significantly strengthen the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Employment Opportunities Will Rise
Furthermore, this project is expected to give international recognition to India’s Aviation Manufacturing sector. It marks a technical achievement for HAL. This collaboration will also provide a new direction to India’s self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat). Thousands of job opportunities will be created. These will be in spare parts, maintenance, and the supply chain related to aircraft manufacturing.
India already shares a robust partnership with Russia in the defense sector. This new cooperation in Civil Aviation will deepen the relationship between both nations. The SJ-100 aircraft can completely transform India’s regional travel sector. This is especially true in areas with limited air services.
