King Charles III Steps Into the Tax Spotlight

King Charles III has paid over £30 million around $40 million in taxes since his coronation in September 2022. Buckingham Palace confirmed the figure in an official statement. This unprecedented disclosure makes Charles the first British monarch in modern history to reveal his personal tax payments publicly.

The decision to go public was entirely Charles’s own part of a deliberate push to modernise the monarchy. British media had earlier reported that these reforms aimed to improve transparency and accountability. The move came largely against the backdrop of the damaging controversy surrounding Prince Andrew’s ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Breaking Down the Royal Tax Bill

“The total sum of tax paid by His Majesty since the coronation amounts to more than £30 million,” reads the official Buckingham Palace statement.

For the 2023–24 financial year, the King paid £11.7 million in taxes. The following year 2024–25 saw a slightly larger payment of £12.9 million. The remaining portion was paid during 2022, shortly after the coronation.

Voluntary But Not Required

British monarchs are legally under no obligation to pay taxes. Charles III, however, made a personal choice to pay income tax and capital gains tax on any assets he sells. That decision alone sets him apart from his predecessors and signals a new chapter for the institution.

The Duchy of Lancaster: The King’s Primary Income

The bulk of Charles’s earnings flows in from the Duchy of Lancaster a portfolio of land, property, and other assets spread across the country. In the most recent year, the Duchy generated around £24 million in income, forming the financial backbone of the sovereign’s private wealth.
