The famous Louvre Museum in Paris has suddenly closed its doors. France’s Culture Minister, Rachida Dati, confirmed the theft occurred early Saturday. This happened just as the museum was opening. The minister posted on social media. She stated, “A theft occurred at the Louvre Museum this morning. No one was injured.” She added, “I am on site with museum staff and police.”

Priceless Jewels Stolen

Thieves successfully made off with several valuable jewels, according to French news agency AFP. However, the Louvre administration has not yet commented on the incident. The museum’s website states the gallery is closed today due to “special reasons.” The Louvre Museum is one of the world’s most renowned art galleries. It houses famous masterpieces like the Mona Lisa. This theft is a major blow to the institution.

Construction Site Used for Entry

The robbery was executed in a truly cinematic fashion. Paris police confirmed that one or more criminals entered the museum early in the morning. This information comes via the AFP news agency. A French newspaper reported that the thieves entered from the Seine River side. This area is currently undergoing construction work. They used an external elevator meant for construction material transport. They reached a room in the Apollo Gallery. Then they gained entry by breaking windows.

Gems Taken from Royal Collections

The thieves reportedly targeted the jewelry collections of Napoleon and the Empress. They stole a total of nine precious pieces of jewelry. Both police and museum management confirmed the incident. The value of the stolen jewels is currently being assessed. Local media reports say three masked thieves carried out the crime. They struck as soon as the museum opened. They escaped on a waiting scooter after the Louvre Museum Theft. The Louvre Museum Theft involved high-value items.
