Midtown Manhattan Fire Sends Black Smoke Over NYC Skyline

New York City woke up to a startling sight on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. A massive rooftop fire broke out at a high-rise building in the heart of Midtown Manhattan right as millions gathered for one of the city’s biggest celebrations. Thick, dark plumes of smoke rose high above the skyline, visible from across the borough and beyond.

The fire erupted at around 9:45 a.m. at 6 East 43rd Street a 28-storey building wedged between Fifth and Madison Avenues. Scary videos flooded social media within minutes, showing walls of black smoke swallowing the sky above Midtown East.

HVAC Cooling Tower Sparked the Blaze

FDNY Deputy Chief Brian Whiston told reporters at a press conference that the fire originated in the building’s rooftop cooling tower part of its HVAC system. “It was a wind-driven event,” Whiston said. “The units took about 140 fire and EMS personnel on scene to take care of the situation.”

The FDNY received the call at 9:46 a.m. launching an all-hands operation almost immediately. Strong winds made things worse pushing the smoke across several city blocks. The fire was knocked down and declared under control by 10:45 a.m. a little under 90 minutes after it first started.

Only Construction Workers Were Inside, All Escaped Safely

The building at 6 East 43rd Street is currently undergoing a massive office-to-residential conversion being transformed into 441 rental units, including 111 affordable housing apartments. It is largely vacant at this stage of construction. The only occupants inside during the blaze were construction workers all of whom evacuated safely, officials confirmed.

Three people suffered minor injuries including an EMS lieutenant and a police officer due to smoke exposure. No civilians were hurt.

Parade Marched On Unaffected by the Fire

The timing of the fire was dramatic it broke out just over an hour before the city’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade was set to kick off. The parade starts at 44th Street just one block from where the fire raged. Despite the dramatic visuals overhead, authorities confirmed the parade was not impacted.

The procession stepped off without any delays at 11 a.m. marching up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street all the way to 79th Street with an estimated 2 million spectators lining the route. Whiston acknowledged the location was deeply inconvenient but confirmed the situation was managed well in time.

Parade-Goers React, City Praises FDNY

Many people gathered along the parade route were left shaken by the sight of smoke rising close to the celebrations but were relieved it didn’t spiral into something worse. “This is the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and many of us have been thinking about how special the FDNY are for this parade, for life in our city and for protecting us,” one attendee said.

A Notify NYC alert was issued, warning people to expect major traffic delays, road closures, and disruptions to mass transit as emergency personnel flooded the area.

Cause of the Fire Still Under Investigation

While the fire was quickly contained, its exact cause remains under investigation. The FDNY is still looking into what triggered the HVAC cooling tower to ignite especially given the windy conditions on Tuesday morning. No structural damage assessment has been made public yet.

The blaze added an unexpected and frightening chapter to what was otherwise a festive St. Patrick’s Day for New York City.
