Mayon Volcano Ashfall Displaces Over 300 Families Across Philippines Villages

A sudden collapse of lava deposits on Mayon Volcano’s southwestern slope triggered a massive pyroclastic flow on Saturday sending thick ash clouds across 87 villages in three towns, forcing more than 300 families to flee their homes in Albay province.

Lava Collapse Sends Ash Clouds Over 87 Villages Without Warning

Mayon Volcano roared back into the spotlight over the weekend not with a dramatic explosion, but with something equally alarming. Huge deposits of hardened lava along the volcano’s southwestern slope suddenly gave way, cascading down in a powerful pyroclastic flow a fast-moving avalanche of scorching rocks, ash, and gas.

The incident unfolded just before nightfall on Saturday, according to Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. Within hours, thick clouds of volcanic ash blanketed 87 villages across three towns catching thousands of residents completely off guard.

More than 300 families fled their homes as a result, officials confirmed on Monday.

Zero Visibility on Roads, Villagers Caught Off Guard

The ashfall hit hard and hit fast. Roads turned grey, farms disappeared under a powdery coating, and motorists found themselves stranded in near-zero visibility conditions.

“The ashfall was just so thick and there was zero visibility even in our national road,” said Mayor Caloy Baldo of Camalig town, located near the volcano’s foothills.

Camalig is home to roughly 8,000 people and many of them had no time to prepare. “Some villagers panicked but we advised them to calm down,” Baldo told reporters.

Cleanup operations began quickly, with local teams working to clear roads and public spaces across the town in Albay province.

Farms Wrecked, Livestock Dead No Human Casualties Reported

Despite the chaos, authorities confirmed no deaths or injuries among residents a relief given how quickly the situation developed. But the damage to livelihoods was real and immediate.

Vegetable farms across the affected area suffered significant losses. In Camalig alone, the ashfall killed four water buffaloes and a cow a serious blow to farming families in the region.

Officials said the aftermath extended well beyond what the eye could see agricultural recovery is expected to take time, even as physical cleanup moves ahead.

“The Danger Is Always There” Officials Warn of Ongoing Risk

By Monday, conditions around Mayon had stabilised but experts were careful not to call it safe. “It’s calm again now but the danger is always there,” said Bacolcol, summing up the volcano’s unpredictable nature.

Mayon standing 2,462 metres (8,077 feet) tall is both a national treasure and a constant threat. Its near-perfect cone shape makes it one of the Philippines’ most iconic tourism destinations. At the same time, it is the most active of the country’s 24 volcanoes.

Authorities had already raised the alert level to Level 3 back in January after a series of mild eruptions triggered intermittent rockfalls, some as large as cars, tumbling from its peak crater.

Alert Level 3 Still in Force Hazard Zone Remains Active

The five-step alert system currently sits at Level 3 around Mayon. This signals heightened unrest with the potential for further pyroclastic flows, ash emissions, and dangerous activity at any time.

For context, Level 5 the highest indicates a full-scale explosive eruption actively underway, with deadly lava flows and heavy ashfall posing direct threats to life.

For now, thousands of displaced families wait hoping the volcano settles, yet knowing that living in Mayon’s shadow means living with uncertainty every single day.
