US First Lady Melania Trump has called the Aleshky humanitarian mission a success. She thanked both Russia and Ukraine for working together under their ceasefire agreement.
Melania Trump Praises Both Sides
“The mission was a success, delivering lifesaving aid to the region and evacuating nearly 800 people. On behalf of America, I want to thank Russia and Ukraine for their leadership and partnership under the Aleshky ceasefire agreement,” the First Lady wrote in a post on social platform X.
Melania Trump also said she hopes the Aleshky mission becomes a foundation for lasting peace between the two nations.
Why Aleshky Needed Help
Aleshky sits on the left bank of the Dnieper River, directly across from Kherson, a city under Ukrainian army control. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Ukrainian forces mined the approaches to Aleshky, creating what amounted to a humanitarian crisis there. He has also credited Melania Trump’s role in organizing the mission to help civilians trapped in the area.
Ceasefire Cleared The Way For Aid
Russia’s military halted fire along the Kherson front starting at 4am Moscow time on October 27, to support the humanitarian operation around Aleshky. Russian troops cleared mines from the road leading into the town. On October 30, aid convoys reached Aleshky carrying food, medicine, hygiene supplies, and fuel. Residents who wanted to leave were given the chance to do so safely.
Russian Ombudsman Confirms Smooth Operation
Russian human rights ombudsman Yana Lantratova said the ceasefire held fully throughout the humanitarian mission, with no incidents reported. She thanked the US First Lady for her help coordinating the effort and asked her to consider making such missions a regular occurrence.
