283 Arrests in Paris: The Capital Bears the Brunt

The capital city saw the worst of it. Out of all the arrests nationwide, 283 took place in Paris itself. Thousands had gathered along the boulevards and at fan zones but a section of the crowd turned destructive well before midnight.

Scenes of broken storefronts and burning debris made headlines across France. Nunez confirmed that looting was reported in shops across 15 different cities throughout the country a sobering picture for a night meant to mark sporting glory.

Seven Officers Injured One in Serious Condition

The human cost was significant too. Seven police officers sustained injuries during the disorder. One officer remains in serious condition reportedly after suffering a fall during the unrest. The minister did not provide further details on that individual’s status.

Authorities had anticipated trouble well ahead of the final. Nunez had earlier announced plans to deploy 22,000 law enforcement personnel across France on the day of the match. Of those, 8,000 officers had been assigned specifically to Paris and its surrounding suburbs tasked with keeping order in the areas most likely to see large crowds.

But for hundreds of those who took to the streets, the night ended not in celebration but in handcuffs.
