US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed confidence that America stands a solid chance of reaching a short-term nuclear agreement with Iran even as key sticking points remain on the table.

The Deal on the Table
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has signaled strong optimism about a temporary nuclear agreement with Iran. He confirmed that a meaningful offer currently exists one aimed at opening time-limited nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
“There is a very good offer on the table right now for entering into time-limited negotiations on the nuclear issue and I hope we can get there,” Rubio said.
Earlier, the Washington Post had reported on a draft framework agreement between the two countries one that Tehran has not yet formally approved. Under that framework, Iran would give up its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium. However, an Iranian official clarified to the newspaper that this is not a final nuclear deal it is a temporary arrangement to push the broader discussion to a later date.

Where Talks Currently Stand
Fox News had previously reported that the US-Iran framework deal was “95% ready.” Negotiators, however, were still locked in disagreement over specific language particularly around the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear material stockpiles.
The backdrop to all this is stark. The US and Israel launched strikes on Iranian territory on February 28, killing more than 3,000 people. On April 8, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. Subsequent talks held in Islamabad collapsed without any result. No resumption of hostilities has been reported since, but the US has imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
