Another Secret Israeli Military Base Uncovered in Iraq

A shepherd stumbled upon a hidden Israeli military installation deep in the Iraqi desert and paid with his life. The base reportedly supported Israeli air operations against Iran during the 12-day war of June 2025.

A Shepherd’s Fatal Discovery in the Iraqi Desert

A shepherd named Awad al-Shammari was tending his flock somewhere in Iraq’s western desert when he walked into something he was never supposed to find. What he came across was a guarded Israeli military installation, hidden far from public sight. Al-Shammari did what anyone might do he contacted Iraq’s armed forces and told them what he saw: soldiers, helicopters, and military tents.

He never lived to see what came next. Eyewitnesses say al-Shammari was killed when a helicopter opened fire on his vehicle shortly after. A relative of the shepherd confirmed his death.

The Base and Its Role in the Iran War

The facility al-Shammari stumbled upon was no small outpost. According to regional security officials, “the base that al-Shammari came across… was used during the 12-day war against Tehran in June 2025.” Israel had reportedly been building this covert installation on Iraqi soil for well over a year beginning preparations as far back as 2024.

Two regional security representatives said the base served Israel for aerial support, refueling missions, and medical assistance during combat operations. “It was designed only for a temporary presence to assist in military operations,” according to the report.

An Iraqi official confirmed the site’s existence to the newspaper noting the base sat in the country’s western desert.

A Pattern of Secret Bases Emerging

This is not the first such revelation. Earlier this month, another major newspaper reported citing its own sources that Israel had set up a separate covert military base in the Iraqi desert. That facility, it was said, supported Israeli airstrikes against Iran during the summer of 2025.

The broader context is significant. The United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iranian territory on February 28 killing more than 3,000 people. Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire on April 8. Subsequent peace talks held in Islamabad collapsed without result. While no fresh fighting broke out after that, the United States began a naval blockade of Iranian ports and Iran responded by sealing off the Strait of Hormuz.

Iraq Caught in the Middle

The discovery of not one but two Israeli military bases on Iraqi soil puts Baghdad in a deeply uncomfortable position. Iraq which maintains complex ties with both Iran and the United States now faces hard questions about how foreign forces operated on its territory without public knowledge.

The revelations raise serious concerns about sovereignty, regional stability, and the shadow wars being quietly fought across the Middle East long before the bombs started falling openly.
