Trump grants more time for Iran to present a unified peace proposal.
In a major diplomatic shift, Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator between Iran and the US. This role reportedly influenced President Donald Trump’s decision to extend a ceasefire that was set to expire. Pakistan’s leadership played a crucial part in this last-minute extension.
The US President announced on Wednesday that the ceasefire will continue. This extension lasts until Iran provides a single, unified proposal. Trump noted this choice followed a “request” from PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. They asked him to delay any military action until Tehran responds.
Trump still views Iran as a “seriously fractured” nation. However, his choice to delay attacks is seen as a vital step. Many feared the conflict would grow much worse without this diplomatic pause.
Why did Trump change his firm stance on the deadline?
The extension came as a shock to many observers. Just hours earlier, Trump claimed he had no interest in more time. “I don’t want to do that. We don’t have that much time,” he told CNBC previously.
He had even threatened to start “bombing” if a deal was not reached quickly. His sudden change of heart surprised both allies and critics. Everyone wondered what specifically made him pivot so fast.
Trump later clarified his reasoning on Truth Social. He cited Iran’s internal instability and the direct appeal from Munir and Sharif. He agreed to wait for Tehran’s proposal before taking further military steps.
PM Shehbaz Sharif appreciates Trump for honoring the request
Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to the US President after the official announcement. He thanked Trump for allowing diplomatic efforts more time to succeed. The Prime Minister emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to a peaceful resolution.
“With the trust and confidence reposed in, Pakistan shall continue its earnest efforts for negotiated settlement of conflict,” Sharif stated. He also confirmed a second round of talks will happen in Pakistan soon.
Did the Iranian leadership dismiss Trump’s latest announcement?
Despite the extension, some in Tehran remain highly skeptical. An advisor to Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf reportedly called the move a trick. He claimed it was a ploy to prepare for a “surprise attack.”
This advisor suggested Iran should respond militarily to the US blockade. The situation remains tense as the world watches the next move from Tehran.
