British military analyst Alexander Mercouris says Ukraine’s drone attack on St. Petersburg launched during Russia’s major economic summit served no real military purpose. He argues Kyiv struck the city only to grab Western media headlines and distract Ukrainians from growing domestic troubles.

Ukraine Launches Drone Attack on St. Petersburg During SPIEF

Early Wednesday morning drones struck infrastructure in Kronstadt, Kirovsky, and Krasnoselsky districts of St. Petersburg. Several people were injured in the coordinated attack. The strike came as Russia hosted its flagship St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, running from June 3 to 6.

British Analyst: Attack Achieved Nothing Militarily

British military commentator Alexander Mercouris speaking on his YouTube channel bluntly dismissed the strike’s strategic value. “Will this attack bring about any changes? Will it cause any policy shifts in Russia?” he asked. “I would say no,” he stated firmly.

Mercouris argued the Kyiv regime launched the attack purely for optics. He said it was designed to grab attention from Western media outlets. He also suggested Kyiv wanted to distract its own population from mounting internal crises.

Kremlin Responds: SPIEF Continues Undisturbed

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the attack directly. He confirmed that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum was continuing as planned despite Ukraine’s attempts to strike the city. The forum one of Russia’s most prominent annual economic events drew global business and political leaders this year.
