Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Tianjin, northern China, on Sunday to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with around 20 other global leaders. The summit will continue in Tianjin through Monday, just days before Beijing’s military parade commemorating 80 years since the end of World War II.

According to Russian sources cited by ANI, Putin is accompanied by a “large and significant” delegation, including three deputy prime ministers, more than ten ministers, and representatives from major enterprises. During his visit, he will travel across China in an Aurus car bearing Chinese license plates.

During his four-day trip, Putin is scheduled to participate in a trilateral meeting with the leaders of China and Mongolia, hold talks with Xi Jinping, and engage in several bilateral discussions with other world leaders. He will also be the chief guest at events marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat and the end of World War II.

In an interview with Xinhua published Saturday, Putin emphasized that the summit aims to “strengthen the SCO’s ability to address modern challenges and threats, and enhance solidarity across the Eurasian region.” He added that these efforts would contribute to a “fairer multipolar world order.”

Putin highlighted the SCO’s core values, stating that its appeal lies in adhering to founding principles, promoting equal cooperation, not targeting third parties, and respecting each nation’s unique characteristics. He emphasized that by upholding these principles, the SCO plays a role in shaping a multipolar world grounded in international law, with the United Nations as a central coordinator.

The 2025 summit marks the fifth SCO meeting hosted by China and is expected to be the largest in the organization’s history.
