US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering canceling his planned visit to India. The New York Times reported that this development comes amid rising trade tensions after Trump announced a 50% tariff on India.

According to sources cited by the NYT, Trump’s India visit is no longer scheduled, and he may skip the upcoming QUAD Summit. “After telling Prime Minister Modi that he would travel to India later this year for the Quad summit, Mr. Trump no longer has plans to visit in the fall,” the report said.

The report added that trade disputes and India’s purchase of Russian oil are not the sole reasons behind the growing strain in US-India relations. A key source of friction is Trump’s repeated assertion that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan during their May conflict.

While Pakistan has publicly supported Trump’s claim, India has rejected it, emphasizing that the ceasefire was directly negotiated between New Delhi and Islamabad. India also maintains that it does not allow external interference in its diplomatic relations, particularly regarding the decades-old conflict with Pakistan.

NYT further noted that Trump’s campaign for a Nobel Peace Prize, along with India’s refusal to recognize the US role in the ceasefire, has intensified tensions.

Currently, five countries—Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan—have endorsed Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
