Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that he is ready to leave office after the war with Russia ends. He emphasized, “My goal is to end the war.” Zelensky also confirmed he has no intention of contesting the next presidential election.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that he is ready to step down once the war with Russia concludes. He emphasized that his top priority is ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict, rather than seeking another term. Ukraine’s presidential elections have long been delayed, with repeated calls for the country to hold them. Responding to these demands, Zelensky stated that he will not run in the next election and will devote all his efforts to bringing the war to an end. Since winning the Ukrainian presidential election in 2019, Zelensky has held office continuously.
What Zelensky Said
In an interview with Axios, he remarked, “My goal is to end the war, not to continue running for office.” This statement marks one of his clearest indications that he does not intend to remain in power indefinitely. Zelensky gained global prominence after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. However, Russia has repeatedly dismissed him as Ukraine’s “illegitimate” leader. Moscow accuses Zelensky of being a Western puppet, installed to destabilize Russia. Earlier this year, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the Kremlin would not recognize any peace deal signed by Zelensky.
Zelensky Calls for Action Against Russia
Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly, Zelensky said the world is witnessing “the most destructive arms race in human history” and urged the international community to act against Russia immediately. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of attempting to expand the war across Europe. Zelensky also criticized international bodies like the United Nations for failing to stop wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, arguing that international law alone is insufficient to protect nations. He stated, “Only weapons and allies guarantee security.”
Trump Criticizes Russia
A day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the UN General Assembly, showing support for Ukraine’s efforts and criticizing Russia. Trump said on Tuesday that he believes Ukraine can reclaim all territories lost to Russia. This position marks a departure from his previous stance, in which he repeatedly called for concessions to Kyiv to end the war.
