Tensions between Iran and European countries over the nuclear program have reached a new peak. On Saturday, Iran recalled its ambassadors from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom after these countries began reapplying extensive United Nations sanctions.

Tensions over Iran’s nuclear program are escalating rapidly. The situation intensified after European nations initiated steps to reinstate previous United Nations sanctions against Tehran.
On Saturday, Iran summoned back its ambassadors from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom for urgent consultations. Tehran accused these European countries of taking “irresponsible actions that will increase regional instability.”
The European powers had accused Iran of failing to honor its nuclear commitments. Last month, Britain, France, and Germany sent a letter to the UN Security Council highlighting Iran’s violations. They gave Iran a 30-day window to resolve the issue through negotiations. If unresolved, strict sanctions that have been dormant for a decade could be reimposed. President Masoud Paheshkian described this move as “unfair, unjust, and illegal,” adding that major powers were only seeking excuses to engulf the region in flames.

Efforts by China and Russia to postpone the sanctions for six months were unsuccessful. A proposal they presented to the Security Council received support from only four out of fifteen members. As a result, the plan failed, intensifying confrontation between Iran and Western nations. The draft had sought to extend the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for six months until next April and referenced UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), which had initially approved the deal. It also emphasized continued cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
If negotiations fail, new sanctions will take effect immediately. These measures include a ban on weapons, restrictions on uranium enrichment, a prohibition on nuclear-capable missiles, asset freezes, travel bans, and the right to inspect Iran Air and Iran Shipping Lines.
