Iran’s government has confirmed it will bring back internet access months after a near-total blackout that began amid domestic unrest and a military attack by the US and Israel.

Iran’s Government Orders Internet Restoration After Prolonged Shutdown

Iran’s authorities have officially confirmed they will restore internet access to the country ending a months-long digital blackout that began during civil unrest and deepened after a military assault by the United States and Israel.

Iran’s government spokesperson Fateme Mohajerani announced the decision on social media platform X. “The special headquarters for organizing cyberspace has decided to restore the internet the President of Iran has issued the relevant order,” she wrote.

Presidential Order Marks a Key Turning Point

A day before the announcement, the Fars news agency citing a source inside Iran’s Ministry of Communications reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian had taken the decision to restore internet access. The aim is to bring connectivity back to conditions that existed before the unrest in late December 2025 and early January 2026.

The unrest first broke out in late December 2025. It started as public anger over a sharp devaluation of Iran’s national currency but quickly snowballed into broader anti-government protests and civil disorder. Iranian authorities shut down the internet amid that turmoil.

How the Blackout Unfolded and Why It Lasted So Long

By mid-January, the government declared it had brought the situation under control. Internet access then began a slow, partial restoration across the country. However, on February 28, the United States and Israel launched a military attack on Iran and authorities immediately cut international internet access once again.

Since then, Iranians have been living with a severely restricted digital environment. The decision to fully restore internet marks the most significant policy shift on this issue in months.
