Iran Cracks Down on Fuel Smuggling, Five Ships Seized in Persian Gulf Waters
Iranian authorities have intercepted five vessels loaded with illegally smuggled fuel. The boats were carrying almost 200,000 litres of contraband diesel with a portion destined for black-market dealers in Persian Gulf states. Border officials confirmed the arrests of eight suspects linked to the operation.
Four Ships Caught Together, One Seized Separately
In the first sweep, border officers boarded four vessels and uncovered 130,000 litres of smuggled diesel fuel. A fifth ship caught in a separate but related operation carried an additional 68,000 litres of contraband fuel. Officers acted swiftly during inspections to secure both hauls before the shipments could reach their buyers.
Fuel Was Headed to Persian Gulf Speculators
Authorities revealed that two of the seized fuel shipments were earmarked for sale to speculators operating in Persian Gulf nations. Smugglers reportedly use maritime routes to move subsidised Iranian fuel out of the country then sell it at higher prices to traders abroad. Eight individuals connected to the smuggling network are now in custody.
