Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump met face-to-face at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and their conversation stretched well past two hours. Xi stressed that shared interests outweigh differences, while Trump called the visit an honor and promised full reciprocity in trade.

A Historic Welcome at the Heart of Beijing
The gates of Beijing’s iconic Great Hall of the People opened to a rare sight on May 14 Donald Trump stepping out to a full honor guard, a military orchestra, and a formal welcome ceremony at the eastern entrance. It was the kind of reception reserved for moments that matter. And this one a sit-down between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies clearly mattered a great deal.
Xi Jinping and Trump then moved inside for what turned into a substantial two-plus-hour conversation on the full range of U.S.-China bilateral relations.
Xi Sets the Tone : Partners, Not Rivals
Xi Jinping opened the meeting with a message that was direct and deliberate. “Cooperation benefits both sides confrontation harms both sides we should be partners, not adversaries,” he said, laying out his vision for the relationship from the very first moments.
The Chinese president went further arguing that the two nations share more common ground than conflict, and that this particular year holds the potential to go down in history as a turning point. He also fired a clear warning shot on trade: no one wins a trade war, he said flatly. Xi added that peace across the Taiwan Strait cannot exist if Taipei pursues independence a firm line that Beijing has held for decades.
Trump: “A Fantastic Future Awaits Us Both”
Trump, for his part, thanked Xi warmly for the grand reception calling the visit an honor. He then reflected on the nature of their personal working relationship in a candid and notably upbeat tone.
“We always found a way when problems came up, we solved them. I would call you, you would call me. When we had a problem, people didn’t even know about it. We solved it fast,” Trump said. He then looked ahead: “A fantastic future together awaits us. U.S.-China relations will be better than ever.”
Trump also made clear that Washington intends to do business with Beijing but strictly on a reciprocal basis. He arrived in China with a delegation that included some of the world’s biggest business names, all there to explore what cooperation could look like going forward.
Banquet to Follow: A Three-Day State Visit
Trump is in China on a full state visit spanning May 13 to 15. After wrapping up talks, both leaders are set to join an official state banquet at 6:00 PM local time a fitting close to what has already been a landmark day in Beijing.
