Xi Sets the Tone Before Historic Talks Begin

Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a brief but pointed opening address lasting just three minutes before sitting down with U.S. President Donald Trump in Beijing on Thursday. The talk zeroed in on a central question: what role should China and the United States play in shaping the world’s future?

Trump’s opening remarks were shorter, running just two minutes. He opened with gratitude and closed the same way.

A Rare Visit: Nine Years in the Making

Xi wasted no time noting the significance of the moment. “This is your first visit to China in nine years,” he told Trump directly, as the two leaders gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The Chinese president then posed a broader challenge could Beijing and Washington work through their difficulties together, given the unstable international climate and mounting global pressures?

“These are questions of history, questions of peace and questions of the people,” Xi said. “And this is the answer of our era one that we, as leaders of great nations, must give together.”

Partners, Not Rivals: Xi’s Central Message

Xi also pointed to a meaningful milestone 2026 marks 250 years since the United States declared its independence. He used the occasion to drive home his central message: China and America must stand as partners, not adversaries. Their cooperation, he argued, benefits not just the two countries it benefits the entire world.

The high-stakes summit is part of Trump’s official state visit to China, running from May 13 to 15. Both leaders held formal talks Thursday at the Great Hall of the People a venue steeped in diplomatic history.
